Ever notice how different your hair is on one side of the country to the other? New York water and Los Angeles water are polar opposites. The type of water your hair is rinsed with will dictate what products you use, how often you wash it and pretty much your overall hair-esteem.

The water in New York is "soft" because it has a low concentration of ions, lack of minerals and a greater concentration of sodium. Compared to Los Angeles, you won't see a chalky buildup on you water faucet or a cloudy glass of water. Your water might taste saltier and the shampoos and soaps will produce a better lather.
If you have fine or oiler hair, your hair will tend to look weighed down and flat/thin and get greasier much faster in soft water. On the upside, soft water will help hair look smoother and shinier. So for thicker and frizzier hair soft water is preferred. Use shampoo that is volumizing and rich in minerals to prevent hair from falling flat and getting greasy.

The water in Los Angeles is "hard" because it is naturally high in mineral salts like magnesium, calcium, copper, chlorine, and iron. Shampoos and soaps won't lather like they would in New York's soft water. The minerals in hard water cause dryness and brittle locks. Colored hair will get brassy and discolored fast. Product will tend to buildup much fast as well in the scalp.

Finer or oily hair will find hard water to be preferred as it will help hair with a more natural and less oily beach wave look. Use a scalp treatment or clarifying shampoo to help with buildup. Wash your hair less to prevent harsh over drying of locks. Installing a water softer will help.

Who knew how much the water in your shower could make a difference.
